She recently retired from her role as a principal of the New York City Department of Education, and is now working as an adjunct lecturer at Brooklyn College and St. John’s University. In Ms. Clark’s former capacity, she gained unspeakable joy from the students, families and staff members she encountered. In her current capacity, she gains the same from pre-service, new, and seasoned in-service teachers. Ms. Clark’s greatest strength is the fact that she is good at building relationships. She also loves to break things down to be more understandable while helping students find their own strengths.

Fern L. Smenyak

A gifted communicator who is good with people and always looking to help others, Fern L. Smenyak has spent the past two years serving as the director of human resources for the Town of Brookfield. She started her career working as the supervisor of associate support and development for Home Depot. Ms. Smenyak held that position for a decade, and it eventually ceased to be a challenge to her.  When she was approached by the town, she expressed interest in the position because she had raised her three sons there and was happy to help them. Ms. Smenyak felt it would be a challenge, especially since the other employees were unhappy with the previous human resources department, but she was up for it. She attributes her success to treating people fairly.

Becky Sexton

Driven by her desire to help local farmers, Rebecca Sexton formed Twin Lakes Environmental Services, LLC, in July 2004. The company works to help producers with manure management plans, and acts as a liaison between farmers and local and federal agencies. Ms. Sexton’s goal is to ensure that environmentally sound agricultural practices are used and that manure is used in compliance with all regulations. She believes that the process has become more complicated than it needs to be, so she wants to simplify it and help her clients understand what needs to be done.

Nina Hodl

When Nina Hodl first started in the utilities industry, it was extremely uncommon for women to be high profile. Using her knowledge of the field and her ability to establish relationships and handle problems, however, she was able to prove herself to her peers and followed a natural progression up to a managerial role. Ms. Hodl has spent more than a decade now working for Carlson Sales, Inc., which primarily serves the electrical industry. She enjoys working for the utilities company, and is proud to have established relationships that go way beyond work.

Ms. Hodl was inspired in her career by the purchasing manager at Carlson, who was the first woman in a management position within the company. She led the way for Ms. Hodl and other women, and is a very strong leader. Another boss who had an impact on her career was both strong and kind; the type of leader she aspires to be.

Joan Hill

Born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York, Joan Hill, the youngest of four children, was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted and taught to always do her best. The biggest challenge she faced was not having enough time to pursue all of her passions. Years ago, however, it was suggested to Ms. Hill that she might offer an art program, and she jumped at the chance of a lifetime. Artful Journeys LLC brings together all of her life’s interests, and everything about it, including the development and administration, is an exhilarating process for her. The annual arts education program is designed to teach new skills, widen horizons, and allow participants to experience art and culture from an artist’s point of view. In a nutshell, an Artful Journey educates and enlivens all five senses. Its programs have recently expanded to include art and cooking workshops and music and cultural tours throughout Europe and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
