Lynn Whitfield

Although Lynn Whitfield had a tough upbringing, she rose above the challenges she encountered and became the first in her family to graduate from a four year college. Once she had emerged with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and criminology in 1997, however, she found that there were no positions available that she wanted to pursue.  Ms. Whitfield’s friend’s father was a judge, and he recommended she go to law school so she could practice criminal defense. That is exactly what she did, and thus an illustrious career in law was begun.

Ms. Whitfield has served as the city attorney for Hallandale Beach since December 2011, where she is responsible for advising the mayor and the city commission on legal matters and providing representation in litigation, among a variety of other duties . The majority of her legal career has been spent in the public sector having served as an assistant state attorney, assistant public defender, and assistant city attorney for the city of West Palm Beach, and a city attorney for the City of Pahokee and North Miami. Ms. Whitfield has been admitted by the bar to practice in Florida and before the District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Lilah Sloane

Interested in environmental work since high school, Lilah Sloane feels that the field is incredibly relevant, and has been growing in leaps and bounds. She also believes that green jobs will allow her to help individuals and communities, which is why she has been working for the National Council for Science and the Environment since she graduated from Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts in 2011. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to improving the scientific basis of environmental decision-making, and specializes in programs that foster collaboration between the diverse groups involved in the field. Ms. Sloane started with the association as a conference intern, and has since progressed to take on the role of program conference manager. Her position entails organizing an annual, 1,200-person conference in Washington, DC, including inviting and coordinating with speakers, overseeing all related administrative activities and public outreach, and supervising all conference interns, staff, and volunteers. Ms. Sloane attributes her success to the pride she takes in her work and her dedication, as well as having a support network of family, friends, and mentors. They cheer for her when she succeeds, help her when things don’t go as planned, and remind her that being imperfect is simply a learning experience.
