Although Lynn Whitfield had a tough upbringing, she rose above the challenges she encountered and became the first in her family to graduate from a four year college. Once she had emerged with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and criminology in 1997, however, she found that there were no positions available that she wanted to pursue. Ms. Whitfield’s friend’s father was a judge, and he recommended she go to law school so she could practice criminal defense. That is exactly what she did, and thus an illustrious career in law was begun.
Ms. Whitfield has served as the city attorney for Hallandale Beach since December 2011, where she is responsible for advising the mayor and the city commission on legal matters and providing representation in litigation, among a variety of other duties . The majority of her legal career has been spent in the public sector having served as an assistant state attorney, assistant public defender, and assistant city attorney for the city of West Palm Beach, and a city attorney for the City of Pahokee and North Miami. Ms. Whitfield has been admitted by the bar to practice in Florida and before the District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
The most difficult aspect of Ms. Whitfield’s career was proving her worth in the legal arena. She has been approached as a clerk in a courtroom setting before, and when the judge called her to proceed with the trial, the faces of those who mistook her said it all. With a strong ability to persevere, Ms. Whitfield has maintained a stellar reputation among her peers. She earned an AV-Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell in 2013, was included among Success South Florida Magazine’s 25 Most Influential Black Women in 2007, and won the President’s Award from the National Bar Association that same year, among a number of other accolades for her accomplishments.
In addition to her work in the courtroom, Ms. Whitfield also has experience teaching law classes, providing legal commentary for WPBF Channel 25, and empowering women through her organization, VLW Enterprise Incorporated. She is very passionate about helping women conquer the storms in their lives, and intends to do more motivational speaking engagement moving forward. She believes that, “if you dream it, you can achieve it.”
