As a child, Kathy Subic was always sketching and designing while she watched her grandmother work as a dressmaker in the former Yugoslavia. Upon migrating to Australia at 18 years old, she immediately found a job in the fashion sector in Melbourne, Australia, and never looked back. Since then, Ms. Subic has had the privilege of working with the greats in the industry, including Norma Tullo, Country Road, Exmoor Creations, Dominex, Topwear Fashions, and Jag, to name a few. She eventually decided to use the experience she gained over the years to build her own fashion line, Zeega. There, Ms. Subic designs, manufactures and sells timeless classic clothing made from the finest natural fabrics from around the world.

Florence Phillips

Inspired by her parents, immigrants who believed in the importance of education and independence, Florence Phillips has led a highly-successful professional life. She served three tours of duty in three countries as a Peace Corps volunteer, and saw firsthand how hard it is to learn a new language. Ms. Phillips also spent time as an American vista volunteer in a variety of locations, until she realized she didn’t have to leave the United States to teach English as a second language. Statistics show that 22 percent of her community is Hispanic, and she was determined to help them overcome their obstacles. What started as a one-person tutoring service has since become flourishing nonprofit organization. Since its inception, ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada has assisted more than 5,000 adults and families advance in life and more than 200 people become citizens.  Many of Ms. Phillips’ students are unable to attend regular classes for a variety of reasons, like job and monetary constraints or child care, which is why her program is reliant on their schedule.

Julie McRae

Growing up in a dysfunctional home, Julie McRae realized early on that education was her ticket out. She excelled in school, and as a result, she was already a sophomore in college when her peers and classmates were just graduating high school. Dr. McRae’s journey hit a big bump when, at the age of 18, she was forced to drop out of college and became homeless. She worked two to three jobs to reclaim her independence, and after two years, she returned to college and completed a Bachelor of Science in sociology with a minor in psychology. Along the way, Dr. McRae also earned a master’s degree and a specialist degree in education, an Ed.S., and holds licensure in administration and as a special service provider in school counseling in Colorado.
