For the past two decades, Susan Boyetchko has dedicated her career to making major contributions to agriculture. She is currently a federal scientist for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, where she manages a research team for the government’s science and innovation branch and focuses on biopesticide technology and the development of green alternatives to chemical pesticides. In her position, Dr. Boyetchko is also responsible for presenting her team’s research to students, farmers, and colleagues, and for developing and evaluating microbial agents. Over the years, she has become renowned for her expertise in ecological crop protection, weed biological control, and applied microbiology, among other subjects.
To prepare for her career, Dr. Boyetchko earned a Ph.D. in plant pathology from the University of Alberta in 1991. She proceeded to join professional organizations like the Research, Biopesticides and Canadian Weed Science Society and the Canadian Phytopathology, which help her stay up to date on everything going on in her field. As a woman in today’s world, Dr. Boyetchko attributes her success to her mentors, as well as to her stubbornness and persistence. She believes that, through collaboration and fellowship, there are many possibilities that can be discovered to build a better world.
