Location: Lemont, IL United States
Throughout her career, Karen Lockyer has held a variety of administrative and leadership roles at Lewis University, and in 2016, she celebrated 40 years with the institution. In addition to teaching in the classroom, she was also a NCAA volleyball coach, and was even named the fifth most-winning coach in the country for women’s volleyball.
Ms. Lockyer chose a career in higher education because she wanted to enrich the lives of students. Her desire to have a say in curriculum and student programs led her to many administrative positions, although she still greatly enjoyed teaching and coaching. She prepared for her endeavors by earning a Master of Education in education administration and a Master of Science in health education, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
As a woman in today’s world, Ms. Lockyer attributes her many years of success to her ability to interact with students, staff and administrators. She is a communicator and is able to conceive great visions, and she uses her organizational skills to bring them to completion. Ms. Lockyer recently stepped down from her administrative duties and is looking to pursue a career as a life coach and motivational speaker, but she will still be involved at the university as a teacher.
