After initially starting out starting out working in internet quality assurance and e-book editing, Johanna Kenney decided to accept a technical writing position and was trained to be an instructional designer. Since then, she has garnered a decade of experience designing and developing effective instructional programs and training literature using the ADDIE model. Dr. Kenney also has 14 years of experience preparing and producing integrated communications, which includes writing, editing and proofreading research papers, technical documents and proposals. Furthermore, in previous positions, she used instructional design methods, along with adult learning theories and validated research, to find innovative approaches to integrate technology into military medical education and training.
Dr. Kenney is currently utilizing her extensive background in her career with Everi Holdings, Inc., which provides electronic gaming machines, payment solutions and kiosks, and analytic tools for casinos. Her responsibilities with the company include cross-training for all employees, developing and managing the technical training content in-house and for clients, and researching integral new technology for existing sites. Dr. Kenney attributes her success to never being content with the way things are; she feels that things can always be better. In the next five years, she expects to transition into a director or associate dean position.
To prepare for her career, Dr. Kenney earned a Doctor of Education in educational technology from the University of Florida in 2014, a Master of Social Sciences from the University of Colorado at Denver in 1998, and a bachelor’s degree in political science and women’s and gender studies from Eckerd College in 1995. She considers one of her greatest personal achievements to be receiving a doctorate while going through breast cancer treatments. As a survivor, Dr. Kenney is very active with After Breast Cancer Diagnosis, where she mentors young women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, is a volunteer with the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas, graduated from the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s Project LEAD Advocacy Training, and conducts consumer reviews for the DoD Breast Cancer Research Program.
