Lilah Sloane

Sloane, LilahTitle: Program Conference Manager
Company: National Council for Science and the Environment
Location: Washington, DC United States

Interested in environmental work since high school, Lilah Sloane feels that the field is incredibly relevant, and has been growing in leaps and bounds. She also believes that green jobs will allow her to help individuals and communities, which is why she has been working for the National Council for Science and the Environment since she graduated from Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts in 2011. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to improving the scientific basis of environmental decision-making, and specializes in programs that foster collaboration between the diverse groups involved in the field. Ms. Sloane started with the association as a conference intern, and has since progressed to take on the role of program conference manager. Her position entails organizing an annual, 1,200-person conference in Washington, DC, including inviting and coordinating with speakers, overseeing all related administrative activities and public outreach, and supervising all conference interns, staff, and volunteers. Ms. Sloane attributes her success to the pride she takes in her work and her dedication, as well as having a support network of family, friends, and mentors. They cheer for her when she succeeds, help her when things don’t go as planned, and remind her that being imperfect is simply a learning experience.

At the moment, Ms. Sloane has a very broad range of knowledge on a variety of subjects. She is especially interested in the topics of energy and water, however, and would like to focus on them moving forward. Ms. Sloane hopes to hold a managerial or dictatorship in those fields in the future, and wants to be known for making a difference in people’s lives. She is inspired by her mother and her executive director, who were both strong individuals. When she isn’t working, Ms. Sloane volunteers at Fahrenheit Flow Arts Festival as a coordinator and greeter leader, and supports the missions of DC EcoWomen and Heifer International. She is also a member of The International Women’s Leadership Association, and would advise the younger generations to listen to their instincts, discuss money, and to never doubt themselves. In her spare time, Ms. Sloane enjoys knitting, jewelry-making, biking, reading, traveling, and fire dancing.
