As a woman in today’s world, Robin L. Biggs feels that the support of her parents contributed to her success; they raised her to be independent and well-rounded, which is important in the real world. She started her professional life at a local meatpacking house as a young, divorced single parent. Driven by the extra mouth she had to feed and keep safe, Ms. Biggs had to quickly adapt to survive in a man’s world. Through this job, she learned how to conduct herself, how to negotiate, and to treat everyone with the same dignity and respect she expected to receive. Once her daughter got closer to school age, Ms. Biggs took an eight month course so that she could advance her career and become a legal secretary. She discovered that she loved this different work life, and that learning new things just made her want more.
In 2005, Ms. Biggs landed a job at the company she is with today, NiSource Inc, as an executive assistant. Her role with the natural gas and electric utilities corporation includes supporting the corporate secretary by performing duties such as screening calls, managing calendars, preparing reports, and working with an external auditor, and interfacing with various groups within NiSource to ensure that legal initiatives and requirements comply with corporate directive, policies and procedures. In addition to this position, Ms. Biggs was able to finish associate degree in paralegal studies from South University in 2013, which she now uses as a court appointed special advocate for children in need in Porter County, Indiana. She finds this program both demanding and rewarding, and believes that nothing can take the place of helping a child in need of love and support get through tough times. Ms. Biggs hopes that this work will lead her to become a better, stronger and more confident person. Looking forward, she would like to finish a book, as it has always been a dream to be published.
