Karen Kimery Neighbors, RN, MSN

TrinityTitle: Nursing Professor

Company: Trinity Valley Community College

                                   Location: Scurry, TX

Driven by her desire to help people, Karen Kimery Neighbors decided to pursue a career in nursing. When the dean of the school asked her if she would be interested in teaching, she accepted, because it combines both of her loves. Her career as a nursing professor was validated when she was voted Teacher of the Year by the students at Trinity Valley Community College, because it reinforced that she was doing everything right.

Over the course of Ms. Neighbors’ career, she served as a nursing education consultant, worked for the Texas Board of Nursing, was a National League for Nursing Ambassador, and reviewed nursing books. She holds a master’s degree in educational nursing, a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and two associate degrees. Ms. Neighbors participates with the American Nurses Association, and the Texas Nurses Association, and she is an officer for the Texas League for Nursing and the National League of Nursing. Looking forward, she plans to stay in teaching or assume a management position. Ms. Neighbors also participates in house supervising at a local hospital on weekends.

The biggest challenge Ms. Neighbors had to face was balancing her family life and her career. Her children inspire her to continue, however, because she wants to set a good example and communicate to them that school is important. Ms. Neighbors hopes to be remembered as a good and encouraging mom, wife, and teacher. As a testament to her success, she was recognized in Who’s Who Among Teachers from 2004 to 2007, and she is a lifetime member of Cambridge Who’s Who.
