With expertise in helping students with language and articulation disorders, Janice Shepard has more than 40 years under her belt as a speech-language pathologist. She worked within the school system to formulate treatment plans, handle private sector patients and those seeking early intervention, provide services for and identify students who possess speech and language disorders, provide therapy and in-services for faculty and staff and conferencing with teachers and parents.

Previously, Ms. Shepard provided speech and hearing screenings and evaluations for Plano Child Development Center. She also taught Speech and Language Development at Chicago State University. She worked patients who suffered strokes and head injuries, and offered early intervention services for children up to three years old who had delayed speech and language development and feeding problems.

Following her desire to have an impact on the world, Gretchen Unger used a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in pharmacology in a variety of engineering positions, including process engineer and sales support engineer, until she became the chief scientific officer for GeneSegues Therapeutics, Inc., in 2003. Her greatest career accomplishment was using the cancer drug she had been working on to cure her own cancer. This also inspired her to not only continue her career, but to also participate in advocacy work with patients.

Mary Barnes has always been a business owner. She previously owned her own pizza parlor, but she had back surgery and could no longer do the physical labor, so she went on to find something she could run from home on the internet. She has experience building a business because she has learned from her own mistakes. She wants to help others looking to start their own businesses from making her same mistakes.

Ms. Barnes’ greatest career accomplishment was getting MB Ventures LLC up and running. She is so glad that she was able to find the right people to work with and the perfect companies to partner with. Looking to the future of the business, she hopes to eventually better organize it, and also hopes that it brings in the same amount of money her pizza parlor did so that her husband can retire.

Renee Danette Petrola

After spending more than 40 years as a teacher for the Mount Sinai School District, Renee Petrola has decided to shift her focus to writing. While she was still teaching, she taught classes in writing and literature, so settling on a career as an author after her retirement was the perfect fit. She received her Master’s degree in liberal studies from Stony Brook University, and actually completed 100 credits past what is required to receive a Master’s degree.

Ms. Petrola names her greatest achievement to be the legacy she has left with her students. She was also recognized for her participation in the Walt Whitman Poetry Contest, where her students also placed first two years in a row in the anthology category. She also accompanied her principal to Washington, D.C. to receive a Blue Ribbon Award, which is given to schools cited for exemplary high performance by the U.S. Department of Education. Throughout her career, she was recognized as an Exemplary Educator and Who’s Who Among Teachers.
