Sara Gay had thought about becoming a doctor since she was a child. When she started college, however, she initially majored in political science and sociology because she wanted to get involved in helping the black movement. After taking a biology course, she decided switched gears, realizing it was a much better fit for her.  Dr. Gay has since become an expert in pediatric medicine, with a specialty in pediatric critical care. She currently utilizes these talents as the medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit at the Bon Secours Saint Mary’s Hospital. In her role with the PICU, she is involved in growing programs, education and research, as well as patient care.

After spending time as a kid going on rounds in the community with her aunt, who was a nurse in the Philippines, Estrella Sutton decided to follow in her footsteps. She joined the health care field in 1981, and has been with Kindred Healthcare for more than a decade now. The corporation is the nation’s largest provider of post-acute care, with settings that range from transitional care hospitals to home health services. There, Ms. Sutton’s responsibilities include overseeing clinical areas, such as nursing, radiology, lab, dietitian and rehabilitation, and serving as the chief nurse of three hospitals in Kindred’s system. She feels lucky that her employer gives women so many opportunities and leadership roles.
