Inspired by a natural desire to improve situations around her, Michelle Arandes Matthews brings more than 17 years of medical experience to her role as associate professor, training director and chairman of pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She prepared for this career through extensive education, private practice and hands-on experience, and she considers her greatest professional strengths to be her unique perspective and mentoring ability. As she looks to the future, Ms. Arandes Matthews’ goals include heavy involvement in healthcare administration and operations in either a hospital or a healthcare system.
In preparation for her professional pursuits, Ms. Arandes Matthews earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She realized that the medical field was truly her calling in her third year of medical school when she was the person a patient asked for when they were about to hear difficult news. Trained in general pediatrics, Ms. Arandes Matthews opened the only pediatric primary care clinic in Boerne, Texas in 2001, where she remained until she returned to academia in 2006. Dedicated to reaching out to students, she hopes to encourage students to work hard while still taking time to enjoy themselves. It is Ms. Arandes Matthews’ aspiration to be remembered in a mentorship capacity.
Due to her distinction in her field, Ms. Arandes Matthews received the Presidential Teaching Excellence Award in 2014 and was named a San Antonio Business Journal Healthcare Hero in 2015. Compassionate towards those around her, she supports local children’s hospitals and free clinics, and wishes she could change health care attainability in her field. She advises students going into the field to further their understanding of themselves by engaging in leadership roles and undergoing varied experiences. When she isn’t working, Ms. Arandes Matthews enjoys spending time with her two children, aged 8 and 11.
