When Rebecca Berman first started in her field of information technology, her mentors saw her skill set and knew it would be a good fit for her. More than three decades later, she has absolutely proved them right. Ms. Berman has spent the past 17 years working with health care provider solutions at Xerox, a leader in document technology and services. As a senior consultant with the company, she has the opportunity to work with hospitals and help them improve their electronic records, a task she enjoys.
One of the greatest accomplishments of Ms. Berman’s career was when she worked in the Virgin Islands in mental health; she automated their computers and taught the staff to be hands on. Helping to build up their health care program was a major project, but well worth it. The greatest accomplishment Ms. Berman had to deal with was getting people to recognize her for her skills rather than her gender. She uses her ability to focus on the global picture while still paying great attention to details to succeed, however. In preparation for her profession, Ms. Berman earned a Bachelor of Science in economics and political science from Northeastern University, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1982. That year, she was also honored as the Northeastern Student of the Year. To stay on top of the changes in her field, Ms. Berman has taken many computer classed and on-the-job training classes. She hopes to be remembered for her ability to communicate with techies and non-techies alike, as well as for her work to empower other women in technology. Ms. Berman is a member of The International Women’s Leadership Association, and supports women’s shelters and clothing donations. When she isn’t working, she enjoys cooking, reading, arts and crafts, and making customized costume jewelry.
