Felicia Bassey-Akamune, MD, FAAP

Title: Pediatrician, Medical Director
Company: Milestone Medical Services Inc.
Location: Takoma Park, MD United States

Felicia Bassey-Akamune has wanted to be a doctor for as long as she can remember, so she set out in pursuit of her goals, first at the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos, and then at Howard University Hospital, where she completed her postgraduate residency training. Following the end of her academic journey, Ms. Bassey-Akamune landed a job at D.C. General Hospital as an attending physician in the emergency department. She also spent six years working as a consultant pediatrician to the U.S. Army at Kimbrough Ambulatory Center before moving on to her current endeavor. As the medical director and pediatrician of her own private practice, Milestone Medical Center, Ms. Bassey-Akamune is living her dream. She considers becoming an entrepreneur and opening a practice to be her greatest achievement.

Driven by the lack of health care and medicine available where she grew up, Ms. Bassey-Akamune also loves to help out and do mission work. She believes that everyone should have access to health care, as people in other countries are dying from preventable or treatable diseases because the treatments aren’t available or aren’t affordable. Thus, Ms. Bassey-Akamune goes to Nigeria every two years to volunteer and educate the people there, as well as provide them with medical supplies. She also provides logistical support for medical missions to Latin America, the Caribbean, and other African countries.

When Ms. Bassey-Akamune isn’t working, she enjoys cooking, running on her treadmill, and playing golf. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and is an honored member of The International Women’s Leadership Association.
