Guided by more than three decades of experience in human resources, Marguerite Thompson-O’Neal has spent the last five years helping to build a high performance culture at Purdue Pharma Canada. The pharmaceutical company focuses on drugs and products for the treatment of pain, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory disease, infection control, and urinary incontinence. As the vice president of human resources, Ms. Thompson-O’Neal serves as an integral part of the executive leadership team and brings forth the voice of the people within the organization. She also orchestrates and leads multi-faceted organizational developmental initiatives, strengthens capabilities in key leadership roles and functions, and provides strategic planning, internal consulting, executive coaching, and leadership.
Ms. Thompson-O’Neal started her career as the general manager of a small engineering company, where she held numerous human resources responsibilities. She found that she really gravitated to the area, and decided to pursue it. Since then, Ms. Thompson-O’Neal has worked for a variety of companies in a variety of industries, including health care, insurance, hospital, and pharmaceutical. She even founded her own human resources consultancy, Maredith Consultants Inc., which she ran from 2004 to 2007. Ms. Thompson-O’Neal found thriving in a business she created to be fun and useful, as it helped her expand her network.
In preparation for her profession, Ms. Thompson-O’Neal earned a Master of Arts in leadership from the University of Guelph. She also completed three executive development courses at the University of Toronto, and became a certified human resources leader and accredited executive compensation professional. She attributes her success to being a good listener and having the ability to put people at ease. Furthermore, Ms. Thompson-O’Neal faces adversity with positivity, and is open to continuous change. She is always seeking opportunities to serve others in the best way possible. Looking forward, Ms. Thompson-O’Neal sees herself in an executive coaching capacity.
