Title: Graduate Teacher Certification Program Specialist
Company: Texas A&M University – San Antonio
Location: San Antonio, TX United States
From an early age, Margaret Garcia knew she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a teacher. She loves kids, and feels that every child should have the opportunity to succeed. As a student advocate, Ms. Garcia felt her role was to be there to help kids fulfill their mission in life. She retired after 31 years to take care of her mother, and took a variety of substitute teaching positions before landing the job at Texas A&M University – San Antonio. Ms. Garcia’s role requires recruiting for the School of Education and Kinesiology and the graduate teacher certification program. She considers her greatest professional accomplishment to be having the opportunity to work in higher education.
The biggest challenge Ms. Garcia faced in her career was all of the testing children have to go through. Teaching just for the tests took away from the fun of the profession. She utilized her ability to communicate with the students and advise them in the right direction to persevere, however, and hopes to be remembered for all of the lives she’s touched.
To prepare for her career, Ms. Garcia earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio in 1971. She attributes her success to her education and to the support of her family, friends and colleagues. As a testament to Ms. Garcia’s achievements, she was honored as the Teacher of the Year from Sam’s Club in 2000 and Biltmore Who’s Who in 2010. Additionally, she is a distinguished member of The International Women’s Leadership Association, recognized for her contributions to her field and to her community. Ms. Garcia is a member of the National Education Association and the Texas State Teachers Association. Looking to the future, she intends to stay in her position for at least a few more years before retiring. When Ms. Garcia isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her daughter and grandchildren, and attending all of the football games at Texas A&M College Station.
