Sheryl C. Maxsom, Ph.D.

Maxsom, SherylTitle: Founder, Sole Proprietor
Company: Desert Springs Educational Consulting
Location: El Paso, TX United States

Sheryl Maxsom has spent more than 25 years in the field of education, first as a teacher and then as an elementary school principal. While serving as a principal, she went back to school and earned a Ph.D. in teaching, learning and culture with a focus on math, science and technology from the University of Texas at El Paso. Upon completing the Ph.D., Dr. Maxsom retired from her administrative role so that she could start her own company as a consultant and trainer for other educators. Due to her faith, education, and years of experience, she felt this was a great career path to take.

Desert Springs Educational Consulting, the result of Dr. Maxsom’s endeavors, provides educational support to campuses and districts in elementary mathematics, science, gifted education, and college and career readiness. Additionally, the consultancy gives her the opportunity to help first-generation Hispanic children in El Paso. Dr. Maxsom believes that the both the state and the nation’s economic success is dependent on the educational success of children. Since Hispanic children are now a majority in Texas, it is imperative that they triumph in educational endeavors culminating in college degrees.

To prepare for her career, Dr. Maxsom earned an associate degree in liberal arts, a Bachelor of Science in elementary education, and a master’s degree in administration. She considers the few challenges she faced along the way to be opportunities to impact change and resolve issues in the education field, rather than roadblocks. Dr. Maxsom is inspired by her faith in God, who guided her and gave her the strength to help others. She supports the charitable missions of the Rafiki Foundation, the Christian Women’s Job Corp, and the Wounded Warrior Project. Dr. Maxsom is also a member of the International Women’s Leadership Association, the Texas Association for the Talented & Gifted, Kappa Delta Pi, the American Educational Research Association, the National Association of Bilingual Education, and the Texas Association of Bilingual Education.
