For the past 17 years, Delia Heck has taken her interest in science and research and used it to teach young adults and guide them in the right direction. As an associate professor of environmental science at Ferrum College, she has taught classes on topics such as environmental planning and development, physical geography, geographic information systems, natural resource management, and natural resource policy. Dr. Heck’s strengths lie in leadership, management, and helping students figure out what direction to take to best fit their potential.
In addition to her work as an educator, Dr. Heck is also very involved with research. Some of her interests include energy policy and economics, and water quality. To that end, Dr. Heck is currently the associate director of the Smith Mountain Lake Water Quality Monitoring Program. Her work with the project involves management and using GIS mapping to present water quality data to the public. Dr. Heck prepared for her career by earning a Ph.D. and a master’s degree from the University of Washington, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Arizona. She is a member of the Association of Geographers and The International Women’s Leadership Association. Dr. Heck hopes to be remembered for making a difference and making the world a better place for the future.
