Driven by her love for math and science, Shyann West decided to become a field engineer. She joined Schlumberger Limited right after college, and currently has 11 years of upstream oilfield service and one year of downstream refinery oil and gas experience. Schlumberger Limited is the world’s leading supplier of technology, integrated project management and information solutions to customers in the oil and gas industry. Ms. West is currently a test facilities manager, but has held various other positions with the company as well, including operations, recruiting, training, technical support, supply chain and manufacturing. She is really happy with where she is; she is a well-respected manager in a company she loves, she has a large sphere of influence within various networks, and she has as supportive husband and two active children.
As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Ms. West is passionate and highly dedicated to educating and encouraging fellow women to pursue studies in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). She feels the Schlumberger Limited is a good place for women who are looking to develop their career in a supportive environment. Ms. West hopes to see at least a 30 percent increase of females in leadership positions by the time she retires. Additionally, she would like gender balance to be natural; it shouldn’t have to have quotas or objectives, it should just be how things work.
Ms. West is inspired her mother, who dedicated her life to teaching her to have ambitious goals, a strong work ethic and self-motivation. To prepare for her career, she earned a green belt in Lean Six Sigma, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Dalhousie University.
When Ms. West isn’t working, she loves to mix travel with adventure sports. Some of her most notable trips include zip lining in Costa Rica and hiking to Machu Picchu. Ms. West and her husband are also involved in various aspects of the real estate field, including buying, fixing and selling houses.
