Location: Hamilton, Bermuda
Drawing upon her ability to empower women and get them actively involved in their health, Gaynell Hayward-Caesar provides her clients with awareness of the resources, tools, services and options available to them as chief nursing officer for the Department of Health in Bermuda. Having prepared for this career by obtaining a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Liverpool, she lives out her childhood dream of helping others as a nurse in the health care profession. Currently, Ms. Hayward-Caesar’s professional goals are to continue to contribute as the Chief Nursing Officer at the local and international levels, be an advocate for the needy, mentor and give back to the community.
The biggest challenge for Ms. Hayward-Caesar has been being a female in this profession and relating to Bermuda’s culture and society, while ensuring that the workforce is skilled to meet health care requirements. Her greatest accomplishment to date is the life work balance that she has achieved and being able to be there for her staff, patients and family. She is also very proud that she was the first sexual assault nurse on the island and the first black manager for the maternity ward. Throughout her profession, Ms. Hayward-Caesar’s inspiration comes from growing up in a nurturing environment, as she was very fortunate to have a wonderful mother in her life that supported and realized her goals.
