Company: Florida House of Representatives, District 92

Location: Pompano Beach, Fla.

Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed is a retired educator from the New York City Department of Education. Gwyndolen’s interest and participation in “governing bodies” goes back to her days as a Girl Scout where she was introduced to parliamentary procedures and in high school she began getting involved in student government. In 1980 she was the first African American elected to the School Board for District 18 in New York City. Knowing that policy drives communities has always been very important to her. She was elected to the Florida House in 2008.

Ms. Clarke-Reed’s focus in the Florida Legislature is on Early Childhood Learning and Health and Human Services including Elder Care. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in health science at Brooklyn College in 1973 and her Master of Education degree from Adelphi University in 1979.  Gwyndolen’s greatest strength is in her ability to communicate with people and in asking others to be very truthful with her. She wants to hear what people have to say.

Gwyndolen would like to be remembered as someone who inspired others to strive for reaching their full potential. Her inspiration comes from being able to make a positive contribution to the lives of other people. She has two more years to complete in her current role and is contemplating the possibility of City Commissioner. In her spare time Ms. Clarke-Reed enjoys traveling, reading , sewing and swimming.
