Company: Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services
Location: Ruston, Mass.
Sylvia Hill became a supervisor at the Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services because, during college, her professions told her that she would be great at working with children and their families. She prepared for her career by achieving a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Grambling State University, and as she continued, she realized that this was her passion and what God wanted her to do. The biggest challenges that Ms. Hill has overcome throughout her career is that some men don’t necessarily view women in a positive light when in leadership roles and they try to override and undercut her authority as a supervisor within this industry.
Ms. Hill’s greatest strengths are that she is a hard worker and does what she needs to get things done timely and properly. She always points out to others their positives and lets them know when they are doing something right and positive. She is constantly told that she has such a positive attitude and that she is always optimistic and never in a bad mood at work even if she has personal things going on in her life and that she can always uplift others when they need it. Ms. Hill’s personal and professional goals are to continue to work where she is and continue to grow in knowledge and ability.
The one aspect of Ms. Hill’s working condition and industry that she would like to change and make available is to have more perks and appreciation to the workers involved in human services. They as an industry see a lot of heartache, heartbreak and violence directed at men, women and children; this can take a toll on these workers. They need to make available and a point to have more fun based encouragement for the staff and let them know how appreciated they are so they can inspire others to become more involved in this industry.
