Title: Performance Assessment Officer
Company: Business Transformation Office, National Guard Bureau
Location: Arlington, VA United States
Initially, Maj. Barbara S. King became involved in her profession to help pay for training. By the end of her military basic training, however, she was hooked, and knew she would be in it for life. Immediately after graduation from advanced individual training, Ms. King began looking for full-time work in the National Guard, and nine months later, she was hired for her first U.S. Department of Defense position. She currently serves as a performance assessment officer for the Business Transformation Office of the National Guard Bureau, where she supports the company’s mission to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of the key business processes for the Army National Guard. Ms. King also oversees the sustainment, restoration and modernization program, reviews projects that allow all of the states and territories to maintain their Army National Guard facilities, and coaches perspective Green and Black Belt Lean Six Sigma candidates.
Inspired by her desire to make a difference, Ms. King considers one of her greatest career achievements to be joining the National Guard Bureau in Virginia. Another highlight was being deployed to Iraq. Although Ms. King found it difficult to be away for so long, she was humbled by how the Iraqi people lived and honored to lead an incredible group of soldiers. She also enjoyed the opportunity to meet and work with military members from around the world. Ms. King is separated from her peers by her versatility; she believes it is truly better to be a “jack of all trades and master of none,” because she feels that the more she can learn, the more help she can be to others. As a testament for her success, Ms. King was honored with the Regional Award for Excellence by the U.S. Army in 2009.
