Dr. Marylou Gammon works with schools that need educational improvements due to deficiencies in compliance with state or federal standards, with an emphasis on small, rural schools with few resources. Her teaching experience covers the span of 45 years, from kindergarten to the university level. She taught at a Venezuelan university from 1966 to 1969 as a Peace Corps volunteer and was previously the superintendent of schools in a rural Arizona town from 1981 to 1994. Currently, Dr. Gammon is also an adjunct professor at Northern Arizona University, where she teaches literacy and leadership.
Dr. Gammon has worked in the field for about 45 years. Her parents were not educated and her mother was an immigrant. Her mom worked for her entire life to become a beautician and own her own shop, which she eventually did. Her parents never denied that she should go to school and did everything in their power to provide her with the opportunity to do so. They supported her and made many sacrifices for her. Dr. Gammon doesn’t like using labels and placing people in boxes. She advises others to do their jobs and fight for what is right. She also reminds them to be aware of how systems work, but don’t be inhibited or intimidated by these systems; forge ahead, remain passionate for what you do and let it show. She feels the following organization has contributed to her success: The National Rural Education Association, of which she was once the president. It helped her serve in a natinal venue and steer policy toward rural education.
