Ann Harris

aharrisTitle: Attorney

Company: Ann C. Harris, A Professional Law Corporation

Location: Carlsbad, Calif.

Initially, Ann Harris became involved in her profession because she initially was a math major at the University of California, San Diego, because she has always loved working with numbers and mathematical thinking. While in the mathematics program, the head of that program told Ms. Harris that she needed to be in control of her career and that pursuing mathematics would probably lead to her becoming a mid-level mathematician. Following his advice, she decided to pursue law, because she knew that she’d be able to control her career and her life. Today, she feels that pursuing law was the first decision.

Ms. Harris received a LL.M. in Tax Law from Boston University in 1981, and a JD from the University of San Diego a year prior. She attributes her success to her parents, who were very intelligent and supportive. Ms. Harris and her family enjoyed a nice lifestyle; they earned good grades and were always on their best behavior. She was taught by her parents that she had to do well in school, otherwise she wouldn’t do well in life. The highlight of her career was receiving the Spirit of CEB Award in 2013 for being an outstanding lecturer and writer.

Ms. Harris has published several articles on estate planning and tax law including: ‘Stock Option Plans after Tax Reform,’ ‘Proper Disposition of IRD Items Can Produce Tax Savings,’ ‘Planner’s Guide to Estate and Gift Taxes,’ ‘Planner’s Guide to Fiduciary Income Tax,’ and ‘Income Taxation of Decedents, Estates, Trusts, and Beneficiaries,’ among many others. In addition to her practice, Ms. Harris is also an adjunct professor of law for the University of San Diego School of Law’s LL.M. program. She teaches income taxation of trusts and estates, as well as federal estate and gift taxation. She had worked in this capacity since 1991. Over the years, Ms. Harris has had many of her students come back and work for her, and some of them still keep in touch with her today.

Ms. Harris is currently at the point in her career where most people would retire. However, as long as she is capable, Ms. Harris will continue to practice law and share her knowledge with her students.
