Inspired by the challenge of fostering positive change, Maria Derylo has served in the nursing field for quite some time. She enjoys improving things for the benefit of her students, as well as for the benefit of her patients. She says, “I love the aspect of clinical research and leadership, which is why I have always been seeking more education for myself to make a difference through my work.” Ms. Derylo is currently an assistant professor of the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing at Loyola University in Chicago, Ill.
Ms. Derylo prepared for her career by obtaining a Master of Science in nursing, as well as a designation as clinical practitioner and nurse practitioner. Understanding the importance of education, she has constantly sought out ways to improve her skill-set, such as traveling for new opportunities and experiences. She continues to expand upon her knowledge by participating in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the Illinois Society Academy of Nurse Practitioners. “It is in my genetics to want to learn and my education has giving me the tools to helping people, which I love to do,” she says.
Truly passionate about making a difference in patients’ and students’ lives, Ms. Derylo flourishes in one-on-one interactions. She enjoys assisting patients with concerns such as obesity and, academically, she likes to assist students regarding research and diagnoses.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Derylo plans to complete research on a variety of topics and perhaps write a book, as well as continue to be a good example for her students.
