On Tuesday evening, May 10, 2011, Vivian Covington proudly swore in as mayor of University Park, Ill. She is the first female African-American Mayor in Village of University Park 43 years of existence. A University Park resident for 20 years, the mayor had been a member of the Village’s Trustee Board since 2003. She has also been a Library Board Trustee since 2001. Married to Andre, they have three children and five grandchildren.
An Information Technology expert with more than 32 years experience of Federal Government service, Mayor Covington is employed with the Veterans Administration. Her management title is Subject Matter Expert for critically important global technology-related programs. Mayor Covington’s professional advise, “Do not sell your body, be professional, be who you are and don’t let anyone change you. Have confidence in yourself and you will eventually gain the respect. Keep investing in yourself and keep volunteering and networking.”
As a student at Eastern Illinois University, Mayor Covington majored in Business Administration with a minor in Computer Science. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration from Governors State University. In recognition of her outstanding professional service, she has received many awards, commendations, and letters of appreciation for her professional and voluntary service. In April, 2015 Mayor Covington is being honored with the Women of Excellence Award by the Chicago.
