spring-2015-dtm-powerpoint-by-sherwood-jones-5-638Title: Professional Educator, Ninety-Second Street Elementary School

Company: Los Angeles Unified School District

Location: Los Angeles, Calif.

Initially, Gwendalyn Newman-Jones began in the education profession 40 years ago because it was her desire to give back to the community she grew up in. As an elementary school teacher at Los Angeles Unified School District, she mentors new teachers and teaches first-grade students, believing her success in both stems from the support and inspiration she receives from her family and her teacher’s dedication. Ms. Newman-Jones’ greatest career achievement was being nominated as a board member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

As a woman in today’s world, what contributed to Gwendolyn’s 40 plus years of success is her love and passion for teaching.  Knowing she leaves a legacy touching the lives of her students and her students parents is one of her most proudest moments as well. The advice she would give the younger generation of women entering the workforce is to get mentors who give constant support.  Make sure you stay current and read books.

There are several organizations that have made a difference in her profession.  First is her Church, Faithful Central.  Pastor/Bishop Ulner helped her in so many ways and today he travels to spread his wisdom and knowledge. Gwendolyn also is involved with a mentoring program called ‘Legacy Program.’  There are about 50 students that are being helped young Latino and African-American students to prepare them for the real world.
