Retired teacher Judith Olsen is proud to have given 50 years to the education profession. She taught elementary school for 29 years (six years of that time teaching to fourth and fifth grade students), and was chosen as the Alternate Iowa Teacher in 1997. Ms. Olsen began teaching at the age of 20, finishing a four-year degree in three years, anxiously and expertly completely summer classes to graduate early and dive into the profession.
Currently, Ms. Olsen provides teaching through her private business, The Olsen Educational Consulting Company. She also serves as a reviewer for federal agencies, and handles a lot of church related work to keep herself active in the neighborhood community. Ms. Olsen holds an emeritus position through her membership with Delta Capa Gamma, and is infrequently involved in legislative events on the regional and national levels.
Ms. Olsen’s advice to women entering in the professional work-force is to “strive for your passions, work hard, find those things you can fix in the world, be strong, speak your mind, be able to communicate with people, and most importantly: be honest to yourself and those around you.” She believes her pathway to success stems from her persistent hard work, need to make a difference in the world around her, and family orientation and upbringing. During her free-time, Ms. Olsen enjoys nurturing and teaching her grandchildren.
